The thought of BBQ food used to scare me, I thought it was a bunch of burned meat covered in sauce I hated. Then a restaurant opened up in Greeley called Bubba's. It forever changed my thinking about BBQ, and now I would say it is my favorite type of food! Although no Colorado cities made the list of best BBQ cities in the U.S., I think we have some pretty good places cranking out the meat. Where is your favorite BBQ joint?

Livability.com has released a list of the Top 10 Best BBQ Cities – Surprisingly Great Places for BBQ. Much has been written about the smoking, saucing and rubbing going on in places like Memphis, Austin, Chicago and Kansas City – those cities by which all other barbecue is measured. So for their list of the best places for BBQ, Livability.com editors purposely strayed from the herd, instead concentrating on those lesser known cities with a large and loyal local barbecue fan base. Editors looked at the number of barbecue restaurants, joints and shacks in a city, as well as the quality of those establishments based on customer reviews – and in some cases, a little messy hands-on research. The top 10 on the list:

1. Lexington, NC

6. Springfield, MO
2. Tuscaloosa, AL7. Bethesda, MD
3. Greenville, SC8. Fayetteville, AR
4. Hattiesburg, MS9. Gainesville, FL
5. Tyler, TX10. Cumming, GA
