On September 10, 2001, the Denver Broncos played their first regular-season game at the new Invesco Field; the next day, the world changed.

The New York Football Giants lost in front of America to the Broncos on Monday Night Football on September 10, 2001; the following day, Tuesday, September 11, 2001, all of America's eyes were on New York City itself, as terrorist attacks leveled the Twin Towers.

It's sadly amazing how things can change, 'just like that.' On Monday night, things were fun and new with the new stadium. Denver fans enjoyed a game where Denver won over the Giants, 31-20, and summer wasn't over yet. We had a lot to look forward to.

The next morning, as the news started coming in about the attacks, Denver, Fort Collins, Loveland, the entire country- was thrown into shock because of those attacks, including the planes crashing into the Twin Towers in New York City.

Twenty years later, things are different; the U.S. just ended a 20-year 'war' in Afghanistan; we call it Empower Field at Mile High; David Letterman's show has ended, and The National September 11 Memorial & Museum honors the 2,977 people that were killed that day.

The next game that Denver played after 9/11 was on the road against the Arizona Cardinals on September 23, and the next game back at Mile High was on September 30, 2001, against the Baltimore Ravens.

Coincidentally, the Broncos will again be playing the New York Giants on the day AFTER September 11, this year (September 12, 2021, at NYG.) Maybe they did that on purpose. The Mile High City and the City That Never Sleeps, meet on the field once again, twenty years after.
