Reports That Peyton Manning Could Run for the U.S. Senate
I'd like to introduce the Senator from the fine state of....
I know. You'd love for that to include Colorado.
According to news reports, former Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning could be running for the U.S. Senate in Tennessee in 2018.
Bob Coker, the junior Senator from Tennessee, announced this week that he will not be seeking another term next year. This has led some to believe that Peyton would be the right choice to fill that seat and to do so as a Republican. This past June, Peyton, Coker, and President Trump all played golf together. Politics being what it is, a Republican seat becoming vacant, Manning's ties to the state of Tennessee, and that they all played golf together is enough to get the rumor going.
Manning has rebuffed these suggestions in the past. This past March in Las Vegas, he told reporters, “Last week I was going to run a team, this week I going to apparently run for Senate, and next week I’ll be an astronaut. … I have no interest in the political world, but would like to continue serving communities.”
Peyton is not the first nor will be the last to have lead a very successful life and career with much money in the bank account and to be considered for a political office. Right now, he's got more freedom to accomplish community goals and to pursue anything he wishes. A political career would at best limit those freedoms. Also, it would be big pay cut. But, as we know......never say never.
