The unofficial start of summer is this weekend, Memorial Day weekend, and that also means the kickoff to camping season in Colorado. However, many of those campers will have to find ways to keep warm without a campfire this weekend. Check all of the fire bans and restrictions around Colorado here.

Just yesterday the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) enacted a ban on much of Western and Southern Colorado because of extreme fire danger. Nearly two million acres of public land on the Western Slope is included in the ban which may not end anytime soon.

Although, Larimer and Weld Counties currently have no bans it is very important that you check with the county and park that you are camping in to find out what sort of restrictions (there are many in Northern Colorado parks) that may be in place.  As we saw just a week ago, even though we are not considered to be in a high fire danger zone, fire is still possible, and can be devastating.

BLM officials said they’re not trying to dissuade people from camping in the High Country but do recommend campers become familiar with the conditions and regulations in place before pitching a tent. Those breaking the fire ban face up to $100,000 and a year in jail.
