Looking for something different out of your donut? Soon, in Colorado, there'll be a new location of a chain that makes and sells very unique donuts. Whereas donuts (doughnuts) were created in the U.S.A., these come via Hawaii and Japan.

These type of doughnuts are taking off across the country, after getting their start over 30 years ago. Will the Rocky Mountain region embrace these "different" donuts? What kind of beverage goes with these? Maybe instead of coffee, you should be thinking Boba.

Mochi donuts have been in Colorado for at least a year, but a popular chain known as Mochi Dough Premium Japanese Donuts will soon be here. To explain them is to say: there are tacos, and there are birria tacos. The are the same, but they are different.

WHAT IS MOCHI DOUGH?

Mochi is a rice dough that dates as far back as 14,000 B.C. in Asia. Polished glutinous rice is pounded out; the sticky mass is then cut or formed into shapes, like balls.

WHERE DOES HAWAII COME IN?

In 1992, a native Hawaiian woman is known to be the first to use mochi to make "American" donuts. 30 years later, there are more than a few chains churning out these donuts every day, including the chain Mochi Dough.

WHAT MAKES THEM SO DIFFERENT?

Fist off, the dough is rice-flour or tapioca flour based, not wheat flour based. Second, they're stretchy, as the phrase "mochi-mochi" describes a uniquely soft but elastic or even bouncy texture.

WHERE WILL MOCHI DOUGH BE IN COLORADO?

Mochi Dough Donuts will be opening a location in Longmont, off of Ken Pratt and Main.
