Maybe it is just me, but with the NBA most likely not having a season and the only basketball news we hear these days is about players signing to play in foreign countries, Greeley having it's very own pro basketball team this fall is pretty darn exciting! The next big step for the American Basketball Association's (ABA) newest team, the Colorado Cougars, took place Thursday afternoon. They officially introduced the team's first ever head coach! I was honored to be on had as Cougar's owner Pat Kelly introduced Karin Nicholls as head coach at a press conference at the Clarion Hotel in Greeley. Hence the name, Nicholls is a woman and yes, this is a mens team. "It has always been a goal to coach a mens team" said Nicholls who has a long resume of success as a womens college basketball coach including a Sweet 16 appearance with Truman State in 1999.

Nicholls has been on hand for both of the first two players tryouts for the Cougars, and said "the men have responded well to her being a woman, and that they have a mutual respect for each other." The final players tryout will be held next Saturday, September 24th, at Northridge High School in Greeley, and the Cougars season begins November 5th in Colorado Springs.
