There have been frozen yogurt shops open since I can remember, but they were few and far between. I can even remember the local TCBY starting to serve ice cream as well as the yogurt just to stay in business. Now though, it seems as though frozen yogurt shops are popping up faster than Starbucks did in their prime.

I must admit I am and always have been an ice cream nut! At least four or five times a week starts to add a little flab to the mid section of even a skinny guy like me. It never really stopped me because I love ice cream so much, and I always avoided frozen yogurt because, well, it's yogurt. That is until I tried it!

It's creamy, sweet, and all the things I like ice cream for, plus it's even better than some of those cheap soft serve ice creams out there. For people like me, you have to get past the name, and you can pretend it's ice cream while be much healthier. The main difference between frozen yogurt and ice cream among many others is it is made with milk while ice cream is made with cream.

So it got me to thinking, is frozen yogurt, or froyo, really better for me than ice cream? Believe it or not, ice cream does still have its supporters, those who believe it isn't that much worse, or even better for you than froyo. The main argument being that because there is more fat you eat less, and with about the same sugar as froyo, you in turn eat less sugar.

Frozen yogurt supporters have this to say. From froyasm.com:

Frozen yogurt not only tastes good, it’s also a healthy replacement for fat-filled ice cream. Froyo is much lower in fat, and contains healthy live cultures, making it the smart choice for dessert.

The biggest health benefit to eating frozen yogurt, is the presence of live cultures. Live and active cultures offer a number of health benefits and have been linked to bone and joint health as well as a healthy immune system.

One known benefit of eating yogurt is the fact that the live cultures and bacteria help with digestion. The bacteria contained in this tasty treat are good bacteria, ones that are needed by your body. People who are lactose intolerant and have trouble eating milk products often have no problem with yogurt. The bacteria helps the body process the lactose!

I guess that makes the decision yours, but there is no denying, frozen yogurt has taken it's place in the once ice cream dominated desert market!
