Growing up, it was something we really never did as a family. Taking vacations just wasn't something my family did. Now that I have my own family I felt that it was important to get away and have fun together. But, high gas prices and a soft economy have many in the travel industry fearing that Americans are going to ditch the traditional summer vacation this year. But is that really the case?

Harris Interactive poll of 2,199 US adults suggests these worries may be overblown.

According to the survey, 87% of Americans are planning to take as many or more vacations this summer as they did last summer. Forty-two percent plan on taking at least two trips.

Overall, 84% of the poll’s respondents indicated that they would be taking a vacation. Of those, 94% plan on spending at least one night away from home.
