The Stapleton neighborhood is in the process of cutting ties with the former mayor it's named after, as many have brought to attention Ben Stapleton's connection to the Ku Klux Klan.

Westword reported that that Mayor Stapleton was a member of the KKK in the 1920s, and used its support for political gains. And, while this isn't the first time Denver residents have wanted to change the name, 9NEWS reported that because of the recent Black Lives Matter protests, the neighborhood is getting closer to ridding itself of the name 'Stapleton.'

There are nine name 'finalists' that anyone who owns or rents a home in the neighborhood can vote on, 9NEWS said, ranging from that of a Tuskagee airman to indigenous animals to, quite simply, Central Park.

You can see the full list from 9NEWS here.

Last week, a petition was started by Denver residents to also change the name of the River North Arts District — or rather change it back — to its original name 'Five Points,' a historically Black neighborhood in Denver.
