Colorado Parks and Wildlife manager, Kris Middledorf, told KDVR that the results of the investigation produced wolf tracks in the area of the deceased dog. The wounds on the Border Collie's body were also consistent with that of wolf depredation.

The second Border Collie sustained injures from the attack. Carlos Atencio, the owner of the two Border Collies, discovered one of his dogs with the injures, but realized the other was missing. That is when he found the wolf tracks that measured five inches in length.

This is the second report of a Gray Wolf attack reported in Jackson County in 2022. The first was a report of a wolf killing a calf near Walden on January 3, 2022. The state of Colorado will reimburse Atencio for the value of the working dog.
