After being part of the biggest band in the history of the world and then two solo albums, one would think Paul McCartney would be about ready to hang up his music career. One would have been wrong! 40 years ago today McCartney form the band Wings. In hindsight, Wings ended up with 14 top-10 singles (including six #1's) in the United States, and all 23 singles credited to Wings reached the top 40.

Although the band had frequent line-up changes a few of the faces stayed the same from beginning to end including McCartney, his wife Linda, and ex-Moody Blues guitarist and singer Denny Laine. Lead guitar and drums would change numerous times throughout Wings existence. John Lennon even became jealous of the success of Wings at one point which inspired his comeback in 1980. In October of 1980 Wings returned to the studio for their 8th album, but because of the McCartney was unable to continue recording due to the murder of Lennon in December of '80 the band went on hiatus. McCartney restarted the project on 2 February 1981 as a solo album to be dedicated to Lennon, and in April of 1981, just short of 10 years, Wings officially disbanded.

Here are a few milestone songs for Wings;

"My Love"- Wings' first US #1 hit.

"Silly Love Songs"- Wings' only year end #1 single.

"Coming Up"- Wings final US #1 hit.
