The Windsor police have received reports of police impersonators along the Front Range over the past few days.

These impersonators have been stopping vehicles, citing COVID-19 violations, asking drivers for Critical Business, Essential Employee or Essential Travel paperwork and are questioning drivers on why they've left their homes, according to a Windsor police Facebook post.

The Windsor Police Department would like the residents of Windsor to be aware of the following:

If you believe that you are being stopped by or have been stopped by a police impersonator, call 9-1-1, turn your hazard lights on and drive to the Windsor Police Department located at 200 N. 11th St. Windsor, CO.

If you do call a dispatcher because of a situation like this, give as much information about the incident as possible.

Relevant details you can provide include: the location of the stop or attempted stop, the description of your vehicle, a description of the impersonator’s vehicle and plate number, if possible, a description of the impersonator who has or is attempting to stop you, and your vehicle description.

Make sure you turn your hazard lights on, as this helps the police find you. Finally, the Windsor Police Department states that should you meet a potential imposter,

It is imperative that you remain calm, follow the instructions given by the dispatcher and remain on the phone with the dispatcher until an officer contacts you.
