Now that Halloween has passed, we can focus on the holiday that both children and adults wait all year long for – Christmas. I know for a fact that you all want to get ahead of the Christmas game and start your decorating early.

The tradition of cutting down your own Christmas tree often gets surpassed due to the popular trend of purchasing shiny, synthetic trees. But why not make your Christmas morning even more special with an authentic tree that you and your loved ones cut down yourselves?

Canyon Lakes Ranger District is hosting a Christmas tree cutting between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on December 7-15.

The permits are $20 per tree. Permits are now available or you can also purchase them at the cutting site duringt he first two full weekends in December with cash only.

The permit supply is unlimited, guaranteeing everyone that wants to cut down their tree will have the opportunity.

The following rules and regulations must be followed at the Red Feather cutting zone:

  1. You must have 4WD (not AWD) or a traction device such as chains or cables.
  2. Snowmobiles, motorcycles and ATVs are strictly prohibited.
  3. You can enter the area between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Directions to the site:

Follow Red Feather Lakes Road 16 miles and turn left onto County Road 68C (Boy Scout Road). Follow Boy Scout Road for seven miles. Signs or Forest Service personnel will direct you into the area.
