The Weld County Drug Task Force (WCDTF) recently seized over 34 pounds of methamphetamine and around 65,000 suspected fentanyl pills from a local drug trafficking organization.

According to a press release shared by the Greeley Police Department (GPD), investigators believe the organization was transporting drugs from Mexico to Greeley through New Mexico. The seizure of the drugs occurred over two traffic stops and a house search.

The first traffic stop happened on August 18, 2022, in Platteville, when GPD K9 Odin picked up the scent of narcotics on a vehicle. After searching the car, officers discovered 1,000 possible fentanyl pills and nearly three pounds of methamphetamine.

Police booked the driver, 58-year-old Irene Barela, into the Weld County Jail on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Distribute and Special Offender Status.

The next stop took place on September 13, 2022, in Gilcrest, when Weld County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) K9 Viper detected the odor of narcotics in a truck. A subsequent search led to officers uncovering about 4,000 suspected fentanyl pills and over 5 pounds of methamphetamine.

Authorities took the driver, 36-year-old Jorge Garcia-Loya, into custody on multiple charges and obtained a search warrant for his home.

Upon arrival, WCSO K9 officer Dexter alerted to the scent of narcotics inside the residence. His handler and other deputies seized around 60,000 possible fentanyl pills and more than 26 pounds of methamphetamine.
