Weekly unemployment claims are declining again nationwide, including in Colorado.

According to the Greeley Tribune, another 5,735 people filed for traditional unemployment benefits between Oct. 11 and Oct. 17, as per reports from the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment.

That number signifies a decline of 507 claims from the week prior.

A benchmark figure of 5,000 weekly claims was put into place by state labor officials, which is based off the weekly average of unemployment claims made during the peak of the Great Recession in 2009 and 2010.

Despite a decrease in traditional unemployment claims, there was a slight increase in state-level assistance claims; 2,973 Coloradans applied for state-level Pandemic Unemployment Assistance between Oct. 11 and Oct. 17 - assistance for gig workers, self-employed workers and others who wouldn't typically qualify for traditional unemployment benefits. The amount of claims increased by 441 from the week prior.

217,974 continuing claims were made in Colorado during the week of Oct. 10, which includes all state and federal assistance programs.

Nationally, 787,000 Americans filed for first-time benefits between Oct. 11 and Oct. 17 - a decrease of 111,000 from the week before.
