Pearl Jam warmed up for their slot at yesterday’s (Sept. 26) Global Citizen Festival with an appearance on the Late Show With Stephen Colbert, where the band made their first live performance of the year. Before tearing through their own “Mind Your Manners” and Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World,” the rockers sat down for an interview with the late-night host, during which Colbert essentially needled the band by continually comparing them to fellow Global Citizen headliner Beyoncé.

“You are known for your stripped-down, no-frills look and attitude, but Beyoncé, who brings more glitz and glamour will be there,” Colbert observed. “Will any of you pull a Sasha Fierce? Because Stone Gossard sounds like a made up name already.”

Though Gossard, Eddie Vedder and company laughed off Colbert’s comments, when it came time for their Global Citizen set, they actually did pull a kind of Sasha Fierce -- insofar as they brought out the alter ego-sporting pop star for a memorable collaboration.

Vedder and Beyoncé teamed up on a beautiful cover of Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song,” which you can watch in the video at the top of the page. Midway through the performance, clips of Nelson Mandela speaking about the importance of addressing poverty -- Global Citizen’s own mission -- played behind the two singers.

It’s been a couple of years since Pearl Jam dropped their most recent full-length, Lightning Bolt. Bassist Jeff Ament recently said the band hopes to record a follow-up within the coming year.
