After many rumors surrounding the idea, its official. Tom Cruise has agreed to play Stacee Jaxx in the upcoming film adaptation of Broadway musical Rock of Ages, according to director Adam Shankman. Shankman, who previously directed the screen adaptation of Hairspray, shared details on the red carpet of the Academy Awards.

In the film, Cruise’s character will wail the Bon Jovi hit “Wanted Dead or Alive.” Shankman also reported that Cruise  and his wife—and Broadway vet—Katie Holmes, checked out a recent performance of the show at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles, where American Idolalum Constantine Maroulis is headlining in the lead role of Drew.

In the big screen version starring Cruise, other big name actors/actresses will apear as well. Mary J. Blige will take on the role of strip club owner Justice, while plenty of Hollywood’s finest are still reportedly circling the project. Dancing With the Stars champ Julianne Hough is on the list to play leading lady Sherrie. Russell Brand is eyeing the role of narrator Lonny and Alec Baldwin is a possibility to play club owner Russell Dupree.Anne Hathaway is said to be considering playing a role as well. No word yet on who might play male lead Drew.

Other tunes in the musical/movie include songs by Journey, Styx, Pat Benatar, Foreigner, Twisted Sister, Asia, Whitesnake and many more.

Rock of Ages is expected to begin filming in May and to be released sometime in 2012.
