It still hurts to talk about what happened to the Denver Broncos on Saturday evening. The only thing that will make the sting go away is having them back on the field at the end of next summer. Until then we can sit and wonder why they lost, what they could have done different, and sulk, or we can root for the other hometown teams. The ones with few teeth, sticks, and skates a.k.a the Colorado Avalanche start their season later this week.

Although I said I was going to boycott the NHL this season after their B.S. off the ice, I kind of have an itch for some Avalanche hockey now.

Colorado’s condensed 48 game schedule is jam-packed with plenty of great match-ups starting from day one. Here are some of the featured games early in the schedule.

Colorado vs. Minnesota, January 19

The Av's open the year on the road in Minnesota against the Wild. Playing on the road in a hostile environment is not going to be easy for the Avs, but they are capable of pulling off the victory. Each team is likely to come out flying, but Colorado needs to control the pace early.

Los Angeles vs. Colorado, January 22

Coming home a few days later, the Avs will have to halt the defending champion Los Angeles Kings. The Kings had a fantastic run through the postseason in 2011-12, but only finished seven points ahead of Colorado during the regular season. In fact, Colorado won all four regular season matchups against Los Angeles.

Columbus vs. Colorado, January 24

After two tough games to start the year the Av's will finally get to catch their breath against one of the weakest teams in the NHL, finishing last year with the fewest points in the NHL. This will be a big game for Colorado, as they need some momentum heading into a four-game stretch on the road after this one concludes.
