1987 was the year, and on this date 18 month old Jessica McClure fell into an eight-inch-wide well casing 22 feet below the ground causing a media circus and gaining worldwide attention. For 58 hours workers tried to free "Baby Jessica" from the well and finally succeeded on the 16th of October. The attention gained from the incident led to a 1988 Pulitzer Prize for spot news photography, a movie, and mentions to this day.
