Last week the University of Colorado at Boulder made news for closing their campus to visitors due to an annual 4/20 celebration of marijuana. This week the university is making news again, but this time for opening up their campus to pretty important visitor... President Obama. The president will be in Boulder tomorrow to urge Congress to keep the interest rates on Stafford loans at 3.4 percent. Free tickets can be picked up today.

With no congressional action by July, Stafford loan rates will double to 6.8 percent. The looming clash between the White House and Republicans on whether students who take out the popular federally backed Stafford student loan should pay higher interest rates starting this summer hits home in Colorado. 166,693 students in the state have a Stafford loan, and based on the loan amounts there, extending the lower interest rate saves roughly $961 per borrower per year.

Getting tickets

Tickets to President Barack Obama's speech will be distributed to the general public today, beginning at noon, at the Coors Events Center ticket office at CU-Boulder. A limited number of free tickets will be distributed first-come, first-served, one per person. Student, staff and faculty tickets were distributed Sunday. A signed ticket and valid ID will be required for entry to the event on Tuesday.
