When you think of gluten-free beers, you usually don't think of New Belgium, but that is soon to change. According to the Coloradoan, New Belgium tried may ingredients in their quest for a gluten-free beer, including rice, quinoa and millet. But nothing provided the taste that malted barley or wheat traditionally provides. After all the testing, New Belgium settled on using the popular process in gluten-free brewing, of adding an enzyme to the brewing process that breaks down the gluten to a point that it is incapable of causing a reaction to someone who suffers a gluten allergy.

In January, New Belgium will release the Glutiny Pale Ale, and Glutiny Golden Ale beers. As a person who ignores their gluten allergy, and enjoys a good beer. I'm skeptical of these new brews. I'm a big fan of New Belgium, and their tasting room. I have spent many Sunday afternoons there, enjoying some tasters and conversations. I have also tried several gluten-free beers, none of them leaving a satisfying taste in my mouth. In my opinion, the enzyme process that is most commonly used to reduce the gluten, comes with a bad aftertaste. However, I won't let that sway me from giving it a try. With the expertise that they brew the rest of their beers, I eagerly look forward to giving New Belgium's latest additions a try, hoping to be proven wrong.
