On the afternoon of April 11, 2021, an overturned kayak was discovered on Carter Lake. A search quickly began to find the kayaker and owner of a dog, who was found alive by the floating craft.

A sad update was provided on Friday morning, April 16, 2021, from the Larimer County Sheriff's Office regarding the search for the victim of the tragic accident. After a five-day exhaustive search, all agencies involved suspended the search for the Loveland man on April 15, 2021.

No further search operations are planned at this time.

According to the press release, over 70 searchers and 700 personnel hours were involved, implementing search tools including:

  • Dogs
  • Divers
  • Drones
  • Underwater remote-operated vehicle
  • Towed sonar
  • Side-scanning sonar

Out of respect for the family and friends of the missing man, LCSO will not be releasing his name as all information to date indicates this incident was a tragic accident and there is no evidence of a crime.
