Listen: Miley Cyrus Covers Metallica + Nine Inch Nails at Glastonbury 2019
Miley Cyrus dished out an impassioned version of Metallica's classic Black Album hit "Nothing Else Matters" alongside her Black Mirror-induced Nine Inch Nails cover at England's Glastonbury Festival Sunday (June 30).
When the entertainer and daughter of Billy Ray Cyrus first tackled the vintage Nine Inch Nails tune "Head Like a Hole," it was on a recent episode of Netflix's dystopian anthology Black Mirror that gave the original Pretty Hate Machine single a significant YouTube spike.
In the show, the pop star's eerie avatar Ashley O rewrites the song's lyrics, calling it "On a Roll." But she performed both versions at Glastonbury, as Rolling Stone pointed out. Hear her Metallica cover and watch a short clip of her "Head Like a Hole" performance down toward the bottom of this post.
Cyrus' reenvisioned Nine Inch Nails number is featured in "Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too," the third and final episode of Black Mirror's fifth series that initially aired June 5. The show's creator and co-showrunner, Charlie Brooker, got bandleader Trent Reznor's permission to reinvent the lyrics for the song.
"Trent got it straight away, it was via email and he was really happy pretty quickly," Brooker recently relayed at a press event for the show. "He wanted to see the script and I got to re-write his lyrics in a chirpy way."
At Glastonbury on Sunday, Cyrus also tackled Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black," joined on piano by the producer of the late vocalist, Mark Ronson. Cyrus' set further featured a guest appearance from Lil Nas X, the rapper who — with Cyrus' father — likewise turned a Nine Inch Nails cut into a phenomenon.
