You may have noticed that it's felt a lot like Seattle this week, but here's a little — er, golf ball-sized — reminder that we are still in Colorado. Fortunately, 9NEWS' severe thunder storm risk forecast shows Fort Collins and Greeley in the green 'marginal' area, whereas out east, there is slightly more of a risk. While it doesn't look like we're about to be pummeled by falling sky ice here on the Front Range of Northern Colorado, it doesn't hurt to be prepared, because 'tis the season.
The National Weather Service's forecast shows thunderstorms late on Tuesday night, with a chance of afternoon thunderstorms on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Temps, however, will be in the high 70s and low 80s this week.
Hail is bad in Colorado, and that's not just our opinion, unfortunately. Two cities in Colorado are the worst for hail damage, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB): Denver and Colorado Springs. In a two-year period, there were over 400,000 hailstorm damage claims, which makes Colorado second-worse hail state in the country, only behind Texas. That's a lot of dents.
In 2018, a Colorado Springs hailstorm actually injured over a dozen people, and resulted in two animal deaths at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.
The good news? Hailstorms are only getting worse in Colorado, according to research from Colorado State University. Oh wait, that's bad, too. Sorry.
