Leon Gladwell was sentenced to 48 years in prison in 1998, after killing his grandmother. He recently was released and was living at a hotel.

After spending more than 20 years in prison for bludgeoning his grandmother to death when he was 17, Gladwell had the potential to hurt himself and many others on Thursday night, September 24, 2020.

Denver7 reports that Longmont police were called to Residence Inn, near Hover and Ken Pratt Boulevard, to talk with Gladwell. Longmont Police report that Gladwell, himself, had said that he was afraid he was going to hurt himself.

According to the police report, Gladwell had propane tanks and knives in his room.

At that point, Longmont Police left to get a warrant for Gladwell's arrest and returned with a SWAT unit.

Gladwell ended up igniting and blowing up one of the propane tanks in the room, which caused extensive damage, including blowing the windows of his room out.

With the windows being blown out, and Gladwell standing in one of those windows holding another propane tank, Longmont SWAT shot Gladwell, but he still wouldn't leave the room.

SWAT finally entered his room at 11:45 p.m. where Gladwell was incapacitated. The wounded parolee was taken to the hospital with one gunshot wound.
