Colorado is one of seventeen states, along with the District of Columbia, that allow you to marry your first cousin. Other forward-thinking states include Alabama, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, New Mexico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Vermont.

What Does Colorado Law Say?

Colorado law Section 14-2-110 outlines prohibited marriages in the Centennial State. While you can marry your first cousin, what kind of marriages are NOT allowed in our state?

• Marriage Between Two People When One Is Still Married To Someone Else
• Marriage Between Two People When Civil Union Still Joins One To Someone Else
• Marriage Between Ancestor and Descendant or Brother and Sister
• Marriage Between Uncle & Niece Or Between Aunt & Nephew

States With Stipulations

There are seven states that will allow you to marry your cousin under the following conditions:

• Arizona: You can marry your cousin if both of you are over 65 and one is infertile.
• Illinois: You can marry your cousin if both of you are over the age of 50 and one is infertile.
• Indiana: Both individuals need to be over the age of 65.
• Main: Both individuals must provide proof of counseling by a genetic counselor.
• Utah: Both individuals must be over the age of 65. Allowed at 55 if one person is infertile.
• Wisconsin: Allowed if the female is over the age of 55 or sterile.
