Opening any restaurant almost anywhere these days is a tough putt to make, given the challenges of rising costs and the competitive nature you face.

One such place in Five Points down in Denver came on the scene about eighteen months ago, and after a hot first six months, business has cooled significantly.

In fact, so significantly that it's led Taco Uprising owner Matias Gutknecht to claim they may be on their way out of business, possibly within the month, according to Westword.

Taco Uprising has evolved quite a bit from when they first opened, eliminating things like table service in favor of self-service at the counter or at a new self-service kiosk. Additionally, the cost of labor has risen substantially, especially in the city of Denver. The minimum wage is set to be increased again in January of the new year.

While a higher minimum wage is obviously a good thing for workers, it can become an issue for smaller restaurants in particular who already operate on a pretty thin margin. As more, smaller places seem to be here today and gone tomorrow, one can only hope that things somehow turn around to preserve the small, local flavors that cool little spots like Taco Uprising offer.

We'll see how things turn out as 2024 winds down!
