The Most Iconic Book that Takes Place in Colorado
Reader's Digest recently curated a list naming 'The Most Iconic Book Set in Every State.' The novels that were chosen are believed to best capture each state's unique character, culture, and spirit.
There are hundreds of fiction and non-fiction books set in Colorado, each featuring different perspectives of the Centennial State in their own, unique way.
But what book does Reader's Digest say is the most iconic to take place in Colorado?
Alaska's "Into the Wild" and Georgia's "Gone with the Wind" are relatively obvious choices that made the list. The book chosen for Colorado was pretty clear as well.
Before becoming a famous movie, 'The Shining' was introduced to people as a book. The thrilling 1977 novel was Stephen King's first bestseller and is still considered one of the scariest stories of all time. 'The Shining' tells the fictional tale of the Torrance family and their fateful stay at a haunted hotel in Colorado. King notoriously gained inspiration for the horror novel after personally staying at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park with his own family in 1974.
Stephen King is one of the most famous authors in the world. In addition to Colorado, his books were picked for several other states on the list, including Idaho and Maine.
A few other well-known books with notable Colorado connections are Jack Kerouac’s “On The Road” and Ayn Rand's “Atlas Shrugged.” Like King, many authors who have spent time in Colorado are both inspired and intrigued by its natural beauty and history.
