See Colorado’s Night Sights at Chatfield’s Upcoming Star Party

Stargazing is a wonderful way to observe the beautiful night sights high above in Colorado's sky. On a clear night, constellations, the moon, shooting stars, and sometimes even planets can be seen, providing a spectacular celestial show for stargazers below.

The best way to take in the night sky is to go somewhere without light pollution. These spots are usually on the outskirts of cities, away from traffic, buildings, and streetlights.

Chatfield State Park is a great option for stargazers. On October 4, the park in Littleton invites guests to bring their binoculars and telescopes for a night of stellar fun at the RC Field.

On this date, the moon will be in a Waxing Crescent phase. This is the first phase after the New Moon and is a great time to see the features of the moon's surface. According to the trusty Farmer's Almanac, Jupiter and Saturn will also be visible on October 4. If the weather behaves, stargazers should get good views of the Milky Way too.

All ages are welcome to attend CPW's Stellar Lounge. The event goes from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. CPW rangers suggest arriving 20 minutes early to give the eyes time to adjust. Electronic space exploration music will play in the background to fully transport stargazers into an astronomical realm. During the evening, stargazers get the chance to learn about sound waves, synthesis, and how animals communicate through sound while enjoying the night sky.

In addition to a viewing device, attendees should bring a comfortable seating apparatus. Only one park pass is required per vehicle, which is $10 upon entry.
