Every year, as summer's come and passed, Green Day emerges from a month-long hibernation, yet again failing to set an alarm, and relying on all of us to make sure they wake up.

OK, so October 1 is 'Wake Up Green Day' Day, and we all have a field day with the lyrics, but the song actually has a pretty serious meaning, written about the death of frontman Billie Joe Armstrong's dad when he was a kid , according to Rolling Stone. The music video also suggests the song is a political message about the war in Iraq (following 9/11), and I remember when the song came out, it hit the charts in the fall of 2005, just after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans.

Leave it to the internet to (creatively) destroy all that sentiment, though.
