A Fort Collins man was killed in a car crash in Berthoud after running a red light.

According to the Loveland Reporter-Herald, deputies were dispatched to U.S. 287 and Berthoud Parkway at 7:15 a.m. on Thursday (June 3) due to reports of a traffic collision.

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office’s Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling team also responded, as per David Moore, spokesman for the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office.

An investigation into the crash determined that a 66-year-old Fort Collins man was driving a 1985 GMC van southbound on U.S. 287, when he ran a red light at Berthoud Parkway and hit a 2014 Nissan Frontier, which then hit a pickup.

The driver and sole occupant of the GMC van was not wearing a seat belt and did not survive the crash. Moore said the man was partially ejected from the car.

The driver and sole occupant of the Nissan was evaluated on scene and not transported to a hospital. in addition, no injuries were reported by the occupants of the pickup, which only sustained minor damage during the incident.

The crash resulted in a temporary closure of the intersection until around noon on Thursday.

Investigators do not suspect that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.

The identity of the 66-year-old deceased man will be released by the Larimer County Coroner at a later date.
