Fort Collins Man Finds Online Scam Listing His Home for Rent

It's difficult to find a nice affordable place to live in Northern Colorado, and because of this, some scammers are attempting to take advantage of desperate house hunters. According to the Coloradoan, a Fort Collins man found his home, that he's currently living in, on Craigslist. The problem is, that he didn't post the "For Rent" ad, and has no intention of moving. This is a popular scam in areas where the housing supply is not enough to cover the demand.

Commonly, the poster attempting the scam will make statements such as, "we have already moved, please don't bother the current tenants, please send us the application fee and we'll send you the key." The best thing to do is to use good judgement. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Also, if something smells fishy, don't be afraid to ask questions. If they are hesitant to answer simple questions, they most likely have something to hide.

According to the story, David Leebrick's friend found his home on Craigslist, complete with photos. He didn't think much of it and let it go until people started showing up to look at the property. That's when the police got involved.
