The City of Fort Collins is helping out businesses amidst COVID-19 by allowing them to defer sales tax payments for 60 days.

According to a press release from the city, qualified business taxpayers may defer sales tax payments affiliated with filing dates from March and April.

Tax payments due in April or May will be extended to June 20th, and interest and penalties will be waived for businesses that are approved.

However, the city is encouraging business owners to continue paying their sales taxes if they are able to. Monthly return filings are still required regardless of deferments.

"Our City's top priority is the public health and safety of our Fort Collins community members, but we must also take proactive steps to support a timely economic recovery," said Interim Chief Finance Officer Travis Storin in the release. "This extension will provide supplemental relief to our businesses that have felt the effects of recent changes in consumer behavior, tourism trends, and employee workforce output."

Those who need to can apply for deferments here. You must receive a positive confirmation in order to be approved.

Qualifying businesses will be based on either of the following:

  • Having current tax filings that are $2,000 or less each month
  • Having a $2,000 or less average monthly sales tax remittance in 2019

Businesses that do not apply will receive notices with information about the tax relief program from the Sales Tax Department.

The department is offering an online chat service here from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Questions can also be directed to salestax@fcgov.com or the department hotline at (970)-221-6780.
