Fort Collins Evacuations Not Likely Due to Cameron Peak Fire
It's a question I've been getting from family and friends ever since the Cameron Peak Fire began to make its way into Horsetooth Mountain: will the City of Fort Collins be evacuated?
After two months of this fire raging with little containment until these past few weeks, it's a fear that many are having. However, the City of Fort Collins took to Facebook this afternoon, October 17, to address some of these concerns.
"Although some rural parts of PFA’s jurisdiction are under mandatory and voluntary evacuations, it is highly unlikely that there will be evacuations in Fort Collins," said Poudre Valley Fire Chief Tom DeMint, sharing photos of the smoke and hardworking firefighters. "Please be assured that the Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team #1, fire officials from Larimer County Emergency Services, the Poudre Fire Authority, and countless others are working in a coordinated effort to prevent this from happening," he continues in the post (which you can see for yourself below).
Why won't the fire blow into Fort Collins? You can thank the reservoir for that, which creates a natural fire line for firefighters to easily access and fight the flames. Chief DeMint also credits the downed beetle kill trees and heavy timber forest that are not available to the fire at Horsetooth's edge.
Finally, Chief DeMint asks the city to keep the nearly 1,100 firefighters who are fighting this fire day and night in our minds, as they work hard to protect individuals, structures, and our beautiful city. Read the full post here:
