I recently sat down with Aspen Hourglass over a cup of free office coffee to talk about their upcoming gig at BandSmash. While they were here, I asked them to give me a list of 'bests,' meaning five great things or places right here in Northern Colorado that get their stamp of approval.

That coffee probably didn't make the list, but these things did:

  • 1

The Fort Collins Castle House (Yeah, that's a thing, and they started their list with it.)

Grayson: I used to live at a place called the 'Castle House,' and we had some of our best memories there; kind of started the band there. At this place we moved into, there was a castle in the backyard with a moat around it. It was a pretty fun place.

    Ace Gillett's

Elvin: They have the best Old Fashioned... and such awesome live jazz. I think with most of us, the grinding-on-strangers dance phase has passed, so we're more into conversation, and it's a good place to go for that.

    D.P. Dough

Sean: I think a great 'number three' to point out about Fort Collins, where we're from, is the classic food joints that you go to, but don't know that you go to until you wake up in the morning. The one that takes the top of that list is D.P. Dough.

(The band formerly known as) Red Room Rendezvous

Grayson: We can't say that we have one favorite local band, but one band that doesn't exist anymore, we had some of the most intense experiences with...we played a couple sold-out Aggie shows with them, and that band was Red Room Rendezvous.

Sean: We kind of grew up in the Fort Collins music scene together, and we really were just brothers skipping down the sidewalk together.

    Alley Cat Cafe

Elvin: Lots of times, when we do coffee, we do coffee at night. We buy it, and then we walk around. Confused and in the darkness.

Grayson: Did you say Alley Cat?

Well, I mean late night + coffee kind of implies the Alley Cat, right?
