Firefighters were called to a fire in the area of Weld County roads 32 and 31, about two miles east of Platteville, at about 9:30 p.m Sunday night. a structure, likely to be a barn, was destroyed, a horse was killed late Sunday, before firefighters got it under control.

Firefighters from the South East Weld Fire Protection District and other fire departments battled the blaze for more than an hour, but had it under control by about 11 p.m., Weld County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Shane Scofield told the Greeley Tribune.

At one point, flames shot about 10 feet into the air as firefighters sought to gain control of the fire. Scofield said he didn’t know how many acres had burned, but a large area was scorched and but between 10-15 people received emergency notification calls telling them to evacuate their homes as a precaution.

Scofield said it was too early to know what caused the fire, and crews remained on the scene late Sunday.
