They say you shouldn't judge a book by its cover - so what's the deal with Colorado and their feelings towards redheads?

Thursday, May 26 is World Redhead Day (sorry to all my brunettes, blondes, etc.), and people all over the world are celebrating... well, kind of.

How Many Redheads Are There In The World?

According to 9News, less than 2% of the world's population has red hair.

Data shows that most people boasting a natural head of red hair live in/are from Scotland (13%), followed by Ireland, where 10% of the country's population could be classified as those many people often refer to as "gingers".

As far as America's concerned, worldatlas.com says approximately 2-6% of the US population is redheaded, which equates to a range of about 6-18 million people (in retrospect, that really isn't that many).

Redheads are clearly a rare breed - so why shouldn't we celebrate them? While people in some states across the country might be celebrating the gingers in their lives, other states might not be so fond of the worldwide holiday (or even recognize the day as being a holiday, to begin with).

A recent study conducted by estately.com sought to determine which U.S. states are the most red-head friendly - and well, let's just say it's not the state of Colorado that's topped the list.

Colorado might be known to be home to vast amounts of friendly people, so naturally, you'd think the state would rank high in this particular study (spoiler alert: we don't).

According to Estately, the top ten most red-head friendly states in the U.S. are:

  1. West Virginia
  2. Kentucky
  3. Ohio
  4. Indiana
  5. Maryland
  6. North Dakota
  7. Oregon
  8. Vermont
  9. Iowa
  10. Alaska

Where does Colorado rank?

As per the study, Colorado ranks as the 38th most red-head friendly state in the U.S. - making it not so friendly of a state for our red-headed friends, after all.

(I won't lie, I'm a little shocked)

What factors were taken into account in the study?

Estately took the following six criteria points into account to determine the rankings of each state for the use of this particular study - see where Colorado ranks for each below:

  1. Fewest number of clear, sunny days on average per state (Colorado Ranking: 45th)
  2. Percentage of Facebook users (per state) with interest in pro-redhead sites, issues, holidays, celebrations, etc.(Colorado Ranking: 34th)
  3. Percentage of Facebook users (per state) expressing interest in these 26 famous American redheads:  Thomas Jefferson, Bonnie Raitt, Axl Rose, Carol Burnett, Chuck Norris, Emma Stone, Conan O’Brien, Jenny Lewis, Louis C.K., Julianne Moore, Malcolm X, Kathy Griffin, Mario Batali, Sylvia Plath, Mark Twain, Shirley MacLaine, Blake Griffin, Lucille Ball, Beaker (the muppet), Christina Hendricks, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jessica Chastain, Dwight Eisenhower, and Susan Sarandon. (Colorado Ranking: 37th)
  4. Local businesses with “redhead” or “redheaded” in name per 10,000 residents(Colorado Ranking: 9th)
  5. Highest amount of redhead representation in Congress per constituent (Colorado Ranking: 19th)
  6. Preference for Ginger over Mary Ann—Google searches for Tina Louise (actress who played Ginger on Gilligan’s Island) compared to searches for Dawn Wells (actress who played Mary Ann) (Colorado Ranking: 28th)

So basically, the moral of the story - or the lesson here, if you will, is, next time you see a redhead around Colorado, be a little kinder to them, will ya?
