This just in: Handwashing works. OK, so we already knew that (hopefully). But just as things started to look up, the Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus started causing some concern, even for those fully vaccinated. Here to put you at ease is a study from Colorado State University that proved wearing a mask and washing hands properly offered great protection for essential workers before there was a vaccine.

Remember wiping off your groceries with disinfectant? You probably don't need to go that far again. However, if you're starting to fear being a 'breakthrough case' or you haven't been fully vaccinated, go back to what you were doing last year: washing those hands really well and wearing a mask. CSU researchers found that it works.

'A team of CSU researchers wanted to understand if health protocols like mask wearing and social distancing were effective at protecting these populations, and if they could provide evidence that such protocols could bring others back to campus in the fall safely,' a release on the study said.

Between July 13 and September 2, 2020, the university studied 508 of its employees, ranging from the CSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital, to facilities, to housing and dining services, to campus police and more. The participants in the study stuck strictly to handwashing, masking and social distancing while at work and outside of work. CSU reported that NONE of the participants surveyed tested positive for COVID-19, and only two had antibodies.

Interestingly, CSU said that most participants were more worried about infecting others, then being infected themselves, and I think that resonates with how most of us have felt this last year.

'Results of the study indicate that for faculty and staff who remain unvaccinated, particularly as the Delta variant of the virus continues to spread, protective behaviors like mask-wearing should still be followed on and off campus,' CSU's report said. You can read more about the study here.
