Police Arrest Man for Threatening Students With Knife on CSU Campus

The Colorado State University Police Department (CSUPD) has arrested a man for allegedly threatening students with a knife on campus.

According to a CSU alert, the incident occurred in the morning on Wednesday (Aug. 24) when a man asked a female student for directions near the university's Rec Center. The man then began to yell at the student and grabbed her arm.

A passing student attempted to stop the altercation, which prompted the man to pull out a knife. After threatening the students, the man walked away, leaving them uninjured.

CSUPD officers responded to the scene shortly after and got a description of the man from the students. Police located the man and used de-escalation and crisis intervention tactics to arrest him without incident.

"This was a serious situation and our officers want to thank all of the bystanders who helped our students targeted by this individual," said Jay Callaghan, Chief of Police for CSUPD, in the release. "Today demonstrated that Rams taking care of each other can make a significant difference when someone is in danger."

"While this situation is not the norm on our campuses and was very unusual, the quick thinking of bystanders and the de-escalation skills used by our officers made a significant difference in the outcome of this incident," he added.

The man is currently in the Larimer County Jail, facing charges of felony menacing, harassment, and false imprisonment. Denver7 reports that the man is not a CSU student or employee.

The release noted that the Larimer County SWAT Team's presence at Canvas stadium was for a campus walkthrough and unrelated to the incident.
