Axios recently created a study that looked to find what Coloradans find to be the state’s biggest issues.

When it came to the subject of crime, 59% of respondents said that it was either an extremely or very serious problem.

That fear may not be unfounded at this point.

A recent ranking found that Colorado is one of the most dangerous states in the entire country when it comes to crime rates. In fact, Colorado was rated as the third most dangerous state in the United States.

With that being said, there has been some encouraging news when it comes to violent crime in Colorado.

Violent Crime Starting to Fall in Colorado

Ever since the pandemic, violent crime has been on the upswing here in Colorado, which certainly is a cause for concern.

Axios pulled data from the preliminary courts in Denver between 2019–2024, and categorized violent crimes as homicide, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault.

In 2021, the violent crime rate jumped from 423.1 per 100,000 in 2020 to 480.4. In 2022, it spiked even further, going up to 492.5.

During this stretch of time, the average crime rate in the country sat at around 380 violent crimes per 100,000 people.

However, encouraging information is coming in about the violent crime statistics from the beginning of this year.

Between this year and last, violent crime has dropped 10%, with aggravated assault cases, which make up most violent crimes, falling by 4%.

Gun violence is down by 14.5% as well.

Axios notes that even though the violent crime rate is falling, it is still not close to pre-pandemic levels.
