When the time comes for one to hang up their hat and retire from working, they often choose to move somewhere more relaxing, where they can take full advantage of doing things that they enjoy. Snowbirds, for example, pack up and head south for the winter to escape the cold, hit the links, and soak up the sun. And while Florida has always been one of the most popular places for retirees to settle down, several other states, including Colorado, are also becoming top choice destinations.

WalletHub ranked the most retirement-friendly states based on three major categories: affordability, quality of life and health care. From there, they also compared 41 individual metrics, such as golf courses and museums per capita, access to adult volunteer activities, and health-care facilities per capita.

The top five includes:

  1. Florida
  2. Colorado
  3. South Dakota
  4. Iowa
  5. Virginia

According to the rankings, Kentucky was named as the worst place to retire. Click here to see WalletHub's full evaluation.
