Urgent Help Needed as Blood Shortage Effects Colorado
Coloradans have always taken their health incredibly seriously.
In fact, Colorado got ranked as the 4th healthiest city in the United States according to Real Simple, and 9th by U.S. News.
We also have five of the Top 10 healthiest counties in the entire country as well, according to Money Inc.
However, at this point in the year, we may need to come together to help others with their health around the state.
Type O Blood Desperately Needed in Colorado
Recently, the blood donation company, Vitalant, has reported it needs major donations across Colorado.
In particular, there is a shortage of type O blood.
According to the Denver Gazette, Vitalant has seen 7,500 fewer blood donations since after the Fourth of July, which is absolutely shocking.
June also was a rough month for donations as well, with 8,000 fewer than what was needed.
Not only has this been an issue in Colorado, but it’s also been a problem across the country.
Back in January, the Red Cross announced there was a critical blood shortage, and that donations had fallen 40% over the past 20 years.
Why is Donating Blood so Important?
It’s quite simple; blood donations can save lives. In a way, you’re helping your community get through problems by donating.
With type O blood being in short demand in Colorado, it is worth noting that it’s probably the blood type that most people can help with.
Type O positive is the most common blood type, with 38% of the population having it. However, it runs out quickly because of higher demand and because people with this blood type can only get transfusions of type O positive and negative blood.
Type O negative is also common, but is definitely the most sought after blood type due to it being universal, meaning all blood types can use it.
