New Law Seeks to Crack Down on Distracted New York Drivers

It doesn't matter what your defense is.  Just don't, please.  Study after study has proven that you're so distracted while texting and driving, that it's literally more dangerous than driving drunk.

I saw a car accident once in Colorado Springs that took the lives of a young mother and her baby daughter because someone enthralled in their phone veered their SUV off the road into this little car that was waiting at a stop light.  It just doesn't get worse than that.  I will never forget the image of the red sheet covering this car so people wouldn't see what was inside.

Yet it continues.  Up to half a dozen times a week, I'll see some yo-yo in the oncoming lane holding his phone up over the wheel - not even trying to be discreet!  I mean, if you're gonna be a dumb bunny, at least do it with some stinkin' class!  Whether in your lap or over the dash, you're looking at it instead of the road.  It just doesn't work.

Long story short, the new law makes texting while driving punishable by a $300 fine and four points off your driver's license.  That's up from $50 and one point.  I think it should be closer to the offense you face for a D.U.I... but it's a step in the right direction.

Don't get me wrong.  I use my phone on the road, too.  I use it to call in distracted drivers.  I'm not big on holding people accountable for little mistakes, or the whole 'eye for an eye' thing.  In fact, I'm known to let more go than most people in most situations.  It's just that this particular thing is a direct threat to me and you.  So please, don't text and drive.
