Bald Eaglet Dies After Nest Collapses at Standley Lake

A five-week-old eaglet names SL1 has died after the nest at Standley Lake collapsed on Thursday afternoon. Standley Lake Regional Park released the sad news of the loss of the eaglet who was the only offspring of the bald eagle parents.

Standley Lake Regional Park's Facebook page posted an update of SL1 Thursday morning at 6 a.m. saying that the eaglet was already attempting to fly at only five weeks old.

According to 9 News, the eaglet was watched via a live feed online by people all over the world. It is unclear at this time as to what may have caused the nest to collapse at Standley Lake.

This is not the first incident that involved bald eaglets this year in Colorado. Earlier in the year, a nest collapsed at Barr Lake after the tree housing the nest fell. The eggs in the nest could not be saved after falling into the water.

SL1 has been removed from the nesting site at Standley Lake due to federal protection and has been taken to the National Eagle Repository at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal. Bald eagles tend to rebuild their nests close to the area of where the previous nest was destroyed.
