It has been almost a month since a shooter walked into a movie theater in Aurora and killed 12 innocent people while wounding many more. The outpouring of support from the community was just what we have come to expect in Colorado when tragedy strikes, but now after a month we move on with our lives, and at times forget that there are still people who were affected that need help. Devan Beatrice Marfil, who was born in Aurora and now volunteers at Platte Valley Medical Center, decided she was going to help by having a bake sale and silent auction.

Marfil felt inspired to help the victims of the Aurora Shooting Tragedy because of her roots in the city so she has put together a Bake Sale and Silent Auction, to take place this Thursday (August 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) inside Platte Valley Medical Center’s (1600 Prairie Center Parkway, Brighton) Bistro area. In addition to the baked goods and auction, there will be a raffle held for participants to win prizes. Raffle tickets will be sold at the event. Prizes for the raffle include a 10 pack of Brighton Oasis tickets, a 15-punch pass from the Brighton Rec Center, and two Colorado National Speedway tickets. Highlights of the silent auction include a one hour massage from Physical Therapy, a basket of Glowing Comfort products, and a hand-crocheted blanket.

Any baked goods, like bread, brownies, pastries, pies and cookies are accepted for the bake sale. Devan asks that items like muffins, loaves of bread and pies be individually wrapped for easier sale. Devan also commented that she will be resurrecting a bake sale item popularized by previous PVMC fundraisers, “Cookies by the Pound”. The Cookies by the Pound usually sell out quickly, so Devan asks that cookies be donated for this purpose. You do not have to bake an entire pound of cookies, but you can contribute to others donations to make up one pound.

Cash donations will also be accepted at the event for those who are not culinary inclined, or a check can be sent to Kathie Young, Director of Volunteer Services. All proceeds go to the Aurora Victim Relief Fund, endorsed by Gov. Hickenlooper. All checks should be made out to the Aurora Victim Relief Fund. Kathie Young can be reached at  ext. 1580.
