Longtime 9NEWS viewers know of former host Kirk Montgomery's dog, Joey. Joey was a beloved pet and four-legged best friend of almost 13 years to Montgomery, and after Joey passed in January, Montgomery wanted to honor his memory, and the shelter where he found him over a decade ago.

In 2007, while filming a 9NEWS segment for Larimer Humane Society, Montgomery met Joey, and knew he wanted him. He shared his story with 9NEWS in the video below.

'I did not rescue Joey,' he said. 'Joey rescued me.'

I learned compassion, I learned selflessness, I learned patience, I learned to be a better person... I learned how to get tough stains out of beige carpet,' Montgomery said. 'I'm so touched... so many people there in Colorado really rooted us on.'

After saying goodbye to Joey in January, Montgomery decided to host a Facebook fundraiser for his birthday, something he had never done before. Montgomery started the fundraiser for Larimer Humane Society 'to further the compassionate, safe, and responsible relationship between animals and people.'

He was touched by what happened next. Montgomery posted on Facebook:

My Friends. To say that I am touched would be a gross understatement. I've never used the Facebook - It's Your Birthday Coming Up - Donation Thingy - Ever - I didn't know what to expect. But I thought I would try it, and humbly ask for a donation, however small, to the place where my beautiful journey with Joey began almost 13 years ago. Larimer Humane-Society - within 24 hours my original "ask" amount has now doubled. I'm floored. I will keep it open until my actual Birthday on the 27th - and my broken heart is slowly, painfully, healing knowing your generosity will help another Joey find a forever home. I know Joey would thank you as well. Peace.

Initially, the goal was to raise $1,000, but currently, Montgomery has raised over $1,800 for Larimer Humane Society and is leaving the fundraiser active until his birthday on February 27. You can donate to the fundraiser here.
