A Dog That Spent 87 Days at Weld Humane Society Finally Got Adopted

It was a tail-wagging weekend for one special dog at the Humane Society of Weld County, who finally got adopted after spending 87 days at the shelter.

Last week, the Humane Society of Weld County shared adorable photos and a heart-warming plea about one of their long-time residents — an energetic, 2-year old pup named Zina, who shelter staff desperately wanted to help find a forever home.

Since coming to the shelter in September, Zina had been showcased as the "pet of the week" twice, but was always overlooked as other dogs were adopted before her time and time again. Shelter staff believes it had to do with something called "black dog syndrome" which is a phenomenon where black dogs are passed over for adoption in favor of lighter-colored animals, and exists in shelters across the country. She was surrendered to the humane society solely because her owner was moving.

Fortunately, advocating on Zina's behalf worked! She may have spent Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the New Year cooped up in a kennel, but with perfect timing for Valentine's Day, she's found a human who will love her unconditionally for the rest of her life. Just two days after sharing her story on Facebook, Zina was taken home to her new family.
