The conditions on Colorado trails can change very quickly. Due to this, many hikers pack waterproof clothing or extra layers, should the weather take a turn.

However, 23 people hiking in the San Juan National Forest on Monday (October 19) experienced a much more terrifying turn of events - something they could have never been prepared for.

At approximately 1 p.m., a new wildfire ignited in Colorado in the South Mineral Creek area above the Ice Lakes trailhead. As a result, 23 individuals and 3 dogs were trapped on the slope due to smoke and flames, and couldn't get back down to the base.

According to the Durango Herald, the 23 hikers grouped together to come up with an escape plan. At that time, they decided to call for help, since several of the hikers didn't think they would be able to make it down safely.

Helicopters were dialed in to assist, and were able to rescue all of the hikers and dogs in a total of four flights.

The cause of the Ice Fire is still unknown and remains under investigation. In addition, the Cameron Peak Fire, CalWood Fire, and Lefthand Canyon Fire continue to burn in Colorado.
