A 2-year-old boy is dead after falling from the second floor of the Aurora Mall on Sunday (July 25).

According to Denver7, the incident occurred around 4 p.m., when the boy's father was holding him on top of an escalator. The boy then lurched forward and out of his father's grasp, falling to the first floor. He did not fall down the escalator.

FOX31 reports that authorities transported the boy to a nearby hospital, where he remained in critical condition until his death on Monday (July 26) morning.

Multiple witnesses told the station that the fall left the boy immobile on the ground.

"At first, everybody was crowded around him and I think someone was checking his vitals," one witness said. "I feel really sad for his parents, you know? They came shopping and ended up having to go to the hospital, not knowing if their kid was going to survive."

The Aurora Police Department's (APD) Crimes Against Children Unit is currently investigating the incident. Although the fall is believed to be an accident at this time, the agency is asking any witnesses who have not yet come forward to submit a tip to Metro Denver Crime Stoppers.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the boy and his family at this time," said Washington Prime Group, the mall's parent company, in a statement. "We are working closely with Aurora Fire and police departments as they investigate the accident."

Due to the ongoing investigation, no further information is available at this time.
