16th Street Mall’s New $350,000 Toilets: I Have Questions

Denver is investing $150 million into upgrading the 16th Mall, including $350,000 on a needed public restroom station.

The 16th Street Mall in Downtown Denver opened nearly 40 years ago in 1982 and has been a great tourist and non-tourist destination. After 40 years, many things have come and gone, additional bathrooms haven't been a big priority, until now.

CBS4 Denver has the story of how there is a new public restroom on the mall, which cost $350,000 which came out of Coronavirus Relief funds. Get it? You can relieve yourself with these relief funds.

These restrooms will be open from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. with an attendant keeping things clean during that time.

I can see this as being a big win for hitting up 16th Street Mall. You need to 'go,' but don't know which shop is 'OK' with you popping in to do only that, or the places that you know that you can use their restroom is 'way back there' now.

I just have a couple of questions come to mind regarding these new bathrooms:

HOW LONG BEFORE PEOPLE START SAYING 'I NEED TO TAKE A CHAMPA?'

The new bathrooms are located off of 16th and Champa, so it's just a matter of time before the phrase becomes a part of the vernacular.

DO WE NEED TO TIP THE ATTENDANT?

Hopefully, they don't mean that there will be a person standing outside the bathroom all day. But maybe they do. Someone to help you navigate the buttons that get the doors to open and whatnot.

HOW LONG BEFORE THEY'RE DAMAGED?

With the bathrooms shutting down at 10 p.m, they seem ripe for those who've maybe had too much to drink and need to pee, to hit them and throw rocks at them.
